Tea Party, Fox News, and Conservatives Attack the Unemployed

It's not odd that I can support the Tea Party, Fox News, and the Conservatives...and then criticize them too. No one person or organization is perfect.

The unemployed are NOT the root of today's budget woes, or the cause of the waste and fraud in Washington's spending. Just as during the Great Depression, the unemployed are the victims of poor government policy and of financial institutional risks. (Google "The Money Masters" for more on this argument).

Most of the unemployed are not lazy kids living with mom and dad. I would guess that most are parents trying to raise their children, and using unemployment benefits as their only source of income (which is below the poverty level).

And I would also guess that they aren't lazy; that most held full-time jobs and worked hard all their life.

To attack these people (whose political associations have no bearing on their present predicament), is not only morally wrong, but naively miss-guided.

I understand the frustration of out-of-control government spending, but shoving unemployed people on the streets will not solve your problems...but probably will only make them worse.

Why was the focus re-directed from government ineptness and corruption, and passed to the unemployed? Because of a failure for the citizens to correct the real problems? Were unemployed people an easier target to blame for this country's ills?

The Jobs Bill was insanely MEAGER compared to what we give to charities and in foreign aide alone. Why diss your neighbors, brothers and sisters, and your own countrymen for all the woes of the country today? Don't you think most would rather have a job?

I believe they would. There's something to said about the pride one feels for a job well done; the pride of getting up and going to work - to survive. Accepting "hand-outs" is shameful for most, but an economic reality. Food and shelter comes before pride - surviving to live and be proud another day.

A job occupies their time during the day; sitting in front of a TV watching re-runs get very old, very fast. Co-workers are a pleasure to be around for most people - experiencing a comradery that can't be found at home. Time spent on the job offers diversity during the day, and new experiences. A beer after work with your co-workers can't be matched to standing in line to collect an unemployment check.

The unemployed know hardships that they have no control over, and feel the desperation and shame and helplessness that someone WITH a job could never understand. They are not PROUD to be out of work, and sometimes end their life because they are.

The unemployed wants better for themselves and/or their families, not less. But the unemployed must make due with what they have...no shopping, movies, or restaurants.

Yet the people who are out of work must now contend with ridicule as well...

I'm conservative but very concerned about the conservative's (and Fox News) attack on the unemployed (which by the way, could be up to 20% of the population!)

All the Liberal blogs says the Tea Party supports Senator Bunning (which they do), as does Fox News. But consider this:

$780 billion went for TARP to help the banks, but they still foreclosed on mortgages and raised interest rates. (Too many people have already fallen behind in their mortgage payments and lost their home. The banks didn't want to renegotiate their adjustable-rate mortgages to conventional 30-year loans at 5% or 6% - - - and keeping the property occupied and maintained, while upholding the housing market prices. Instead, those homes were abandoned, vandalized, and fell in disrepair. Now some of those evicted families are living in their cars.)

The Stimulus Bill (now projected to be $821 billion) went for waste and fraud (much going to jobs in foreign countries).

$180 billion went to AIG (who wants another $10 billion more) to pay domestic AND foreign banks 100% on the dollar for risky credit-default-swaps.

Hundreds of billions more went to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to back government guaranteed loans to those nice banks.

Not to mention billions of dollars more are going to the IMF and to foreign aide. So what's the fuss if we help our own brothers and sisters?

...yet the Tea Party, the conservatives, and Fox News wants to hail Bunning as a hero for blocking as measly $10 billion to help the unemployed? What are they thinking? Using the down-trodden as the scapegoat for the liberal's wasteful spending???

I would guess that 60% of the unemployed are either Republican, conservative, or a Tea Party member. I don't see how punishing them would help their cause. Even if a small percentage of those collecting unemployment benefits were supposedly "lazy", how can that possibly compare to "cash-for-clunkers", cash-for-caulkers", cap-and-trade, Obama-care, TARP, Stimulus Package, Omnibus Bill, or the national debt?

As a conservative with alliance to the Tea Party, I believe that attacking the unemployed only hurts the TPP's cause. Bunning could have used any other spending bill to make his case, but he picked the smallest one (and targeting the weakest people) to make his point.

The jobs bill (to help American citizens out of work) is paultry compared to the government excess and waste in Washington.

Senator Bunning is on his way out, and could care less about the Tea Party or the Progressives running our government...he is a cranky and senile old guy that the Tea Party does NOT want.

Unemployed Republicans, conservatives, and a Tea Party members can still vote!

On my blog, I question Fox News' attacks on the unemployed as well.

Many people are desperate. Stop the attacks on the unemployed, but give them a job instead. We'll ALL be better off.

Extended Federal Unemployment Benefits - Tier V - UPDATES

Updates Moved to Facebook

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tier-Five-Or-Die/120731691298779

New to the "Tier V" and "99ers" movement? Go here:

http://tobuds.com/99er

This is my last post here. Now I'll only be focused only on 99ers - Any updates for the LONG-TERM unemployed will be there.

=============================

Federal unemployment benefits (EUC) kick in after the basic state-funded 26 weeks of coverage expire. These federal benefits are divided into 4 tiers (Some States automatically add these benefits when you make your regularly weekly claim).

Similar to below: Different in some states

26 weeks regular states-funded benefits +

Tier I - 20 weeks Federal benefits
Tier II - 14 weeks Federal benefits
Tier III - 13 weeks Federal benefits
Tier VI - 6 weeks Federal benefits
_____________________________

= 79 weeks sub-total
+ 20 weeks State Extended Benefits ( SEB )
__________________________
= 99 weeks Total MAX combined benefits - DONE!

No Tier V was added!

Those who haven't yet filed, or had on-going claims, will have them continue until June 2nd. Legislation is pending to extend these benefits until the end of the year (or until they expire after 99 weeks...whichever comes first).

Those who already used 99 weeks are SOL.

Every week thousands of people are exhausting their 99th week of benefits and are no longer being "officially" counted in the unemployment rate...which is REALLY close to 20% now (not seen since the Great Depression).

..and it's only going to get worse.

For better or worse, much of the country saw the Great Depression as something akin to a natural disaster, and people accordingly lowered their expectations for their standard of living.

The struggle over economic policy in the 1930's seems almost strikingly parallel to today's; an episode in the long, historical conflict between business participants in the market and anti-business academics.

There's abundant evidence that both the Republican Hoover and the Democrat Roosevelt unwittingly worsened the Great Depression. These two American leaders foolishly relied on the advice of elites, believing that the graduates of our best schools should manage the country.

Roosevelt gave free rein to the professors, until the start of the Second World War led him to realize that he would need the tycoons to help mobilize to defeat Hitler.

The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression

Where's all the moral outrage!

Foreclosures are going up to record highs, and people can't even afford to pay their utility bills, but what's the big news of the day?

An erupting volcano in Iceland that may strand millions of people that are traveling to and from Europe.

You will be swept under the rug and be permanently forgotten. The only jobless people ever mentioned any more are those who haven't used up their 99 weeks of benefits as of yet. And when they eventually do, then they TOO will also be forgotten.

The budget is under attack because of all the congressional spending, waste, fraud, and abuse. Now we have healthcare. And where does the axe first fall when cutbacks are being discussed? The unemployed. Those who worked and contributed for years, are fast becoming one of the most popular scapegoats for "budget reform".

And after everybody exhausts all their unemployment benefits, the government will then declare a 0% unemployment rate, and the rest of the country will breath a sigh of relief, and then just go about on their merry way.

You were once the 800 pound gorilla in the room that everyone was trying hard to ignore. Now they won't even make eye-contact with you anymore because you've become the dirty homeless man begging for change.

Yes, you....you won't even be a statistic anymore. You'll just be someone that somebody once knew.

And life marches on without you.

Barack Obama signed a bill today that:

"...comes as welcome relief to hundreds of thousands of people who lost out on the additional weeks of compensation after exhausting their state-paid benefits. They now will be able to reapply for long-term unemployment benefits and receive those checks retroactively under the legislation."

Obama said in his statement: "As I requested in my budget, I urge Congress to move quickly to extend these benefits through the end of this year."

Nobody ever says those words..."TIER V!"

33 States Saw Jobs Rise in March!!!

...or so, proclaims Fox News.

As usual, Fox News boldly overstates any job gains, and pathetically under-reports job losses! And they repeatedly point out that their polls show that 73% of Americans DON'T support extending benefits to the jobless. (I'd like to meet one of those people...)

Fox writes: "In its monthly look at state job trends, the Labor Department says that Maryland led the country with a gain of 35,800 in payroll jobs."

Woo-wee! 35 thousand new jobs...when millions have fallen like dominos! (Those "new" jobs are most likely census work).

SEC Accuses Goldman Sachs of Fraud

End of April 16th Updates

====================

New York Times: The Labor Department said first-time requests for jobless benefits rose to 484,000 last week.

L.A. Times: Also increasing was the number of people continuing to apply for unemployment benefits, up to 4.64 million from 4.57 million.

Bureau of Labor and Statistics: The total jobless, persons unemployed 15 weeks or longer, discouraged workers, marginally attached, and those only working part time = 17% of the workforce...

...but the news media (such as Fox and CNN) consistently emphasizes that only 9.7% are unemployed - both touting the same lame B.S. about how lazy the unemployed are.

How Unemployment Benefits Affect the Budget

Unemployment compensation ended for more than 400,000 people whose benefits lapsed but who would have otherwise been eligible to reapply for additional weeks of compensation if the program's authority had not ended last week. More than 5 million people continue to receive the extended benefits, but 200,000 people each week stand to lose them if the impasse continues.

The cost of extended unemployment benefits is about $7 billion a month (or $84 billion a year).

The national budget is approximately $3,500 billion (or $3.5 trillion)

5 million people collecting extended unemployment benefits is 2.5% of the annual national budget.

By comparison:

Defence is 23% of the annual national budget.
Social Security is 20% of the annual national budget.
Medicare and Medicaid is 19% of the annual national budget.
TARP is 4% of the annual national budget.
Unemployment benefits is 2.5% of the annual national budget

531 members of both houses of Congress earning at LEAST $174,000 a year = $92.4 million annually plus full pensions and healthcare benefits (worth about another $92.4 million).

IMPORTANT NOTE: After "regular" State benefits, and Federal Tiers I though IV have been exhausted, some States with high unemployment offer State Extended Benefits ( SEB ) - an additional 13 to 20 weeks. Contact your local office. You may have to re-open a new claim to receive these benefits and mail in a weekly form every week afterwards, detailing your job searches.

Having exhausted all 4 Tiers of unemployment extensions, you will no longer be counted among the jobless. It's offical - YOU'RE NOT BEING COUNTED ANY MORE IN THE JOBLESS NUMBERS!

The indubitable reality that many of the jobs that have been lost, will never return.

Those who have lost their jobs to foreign outsourcing or labor-replacing technologies are unlikely ever to get them back. And they have little hope of finding new jobs that pay as well. More than 40% of today's unemployed have been without work for over six months, a higher proportion than at any time in 60 years.

The only way many of today's jobless are likely to get new ones is by settling for much lower wages and benefits. The official unemployment numbers hide the extent to which American workers are already on this downward path.

ATTENTION! Is any work better than no work? Not if you qualify for unemployment benefits.

Many people who have been out of work for a year are picking up work as temps or part-timers, unaware that state agencies will recalculate their unemployment benefits and use their most recent work history and pay level - and because their most recent wages are much lower than the wages they earned in their prior fulltime job, they are facing substantial cuts in their weekly unemployment benefits.

Also:

April 8, 2010 - The Federal Reserve chairman, Mr. Bernanke has hinted that long-term unemployment has become one of his major worries as the economic recovery slowly moves forward. Noting that more than 40 percent of the unemployed have been out of work six months or longer, nearly double the share of a year ago, he said: "I am particularly concerned about that statistic, because long spells of unemployment erode skills and lower the longer-term income and employment prospects of these workers."

Economists say it will take at least until 2015 for the economy to get back to "normal" (meaning a jobless rate of 5.5 percent). And it will also take years for the economy to recover the 8.4 milion jobs wiped out by the recession.

The Jobless will soon be forgotten, lost in the shuffle with everything else that's going on in Washington DC...and ALL benefits will eventually expire.

FAST FACTS:

* Almost 2 out of 10 people are unemployed - but only 1 out of 10 collect benefits.
* Unemployment is nearer to 17.5% than the government "reported" 9.7% (those who collect benefits).
* More and more people are entering the job market after graduating from school or leaving military service (and from immigration).
* There is only 1 job for every 6 looking for work.
* Democrats don't create an environment for creating jobs because of excess regulation and taxes (Obama-Care, Cap-and-Trade, etc.)
* The Republicans want to end benefits, even though it's a minuscule in the budget; and that money goes immediately back into the economy.
* With the multi-million dollar write-downs that major corportations are taking because of Obama-Care, don't exect much in the way of job growth.
* Coverage under Cobra benefits expires after 18 months (the Cobra subsidy ended on March 31). Obama-Care included nothing about extending Cobra. Medicare is available if you're 65.

:::::::: AARP 55+ Job Fairs ::::::::::::

AARP's Public Policy Institute reported that unemployment for Americans 55 and older surged 331 percent over the past decade!

The institute recently reported that the February 2010 unemployment rate for age 55+ workers remained higher than in any month since the late 1940s. In addition, 55+ unemployed workers spend a longer time that other groups looking for work.

55+ job seekers may register for specific job fairs at www.aarp.org/realrelief or call toll-free 1-888-321-5349
(AARP Press release and dates here)

No benefits were proposed after Tier IV has been exhausted - No "Tier V" was proposed.

http://www.gop.gov/bill/111/2/hr4851

The recent jobs bill extends some of the deadlines for those who were laid off later in 2009 and into 2010 and can still qualify for the extra unemployment benefits provided in last year's stimulus bill.

But once someone has moved through the various tiers of coverage (which is combined with a Federal/State Extended Benefits program), at the most, those benefits expires after 99 weeks of unemployment coverage. This bill doesn't address actual benefits beyond 99 weeks, only the deadline for qualifing for those benfits.

========= BENEFITS EXPLAINED =======

Federal unemployment benefits kick in after the basic state-funded 26 weeks of coverage expire. These federal benefits, worth up to an additional 73 weeks (99 total), are divided into tiers, and the jobless must apply each time they move into a new tier. (Some States automaticaly add these benefits when you make your regularly weekly claim.)

Since the middle of 2008, two federal government sponsored extended unemployment benefit programs (the extended benefits and EUC 2008 from recent legislation) have been picking up claimants that have fallen off of the traditional State unemployment benefits rolls.

Currently there are some 5.8 million people receiving federal extended unemployment benefits.

Taken together with the latest 5.54 million people that are currently counted as receiving traditional continued unemployment benefits, there are well over 11 million people on state and federal unemployment rolls.

The ACTUAL unemployment rate probably remains around 17% (this includes those who don't qualify or are new to the work force.)

Congress Makes History in 2010 - As the Worst Congress Ever!

Sometimes great people change the world. Sometimes a person is forced to become more than they would otherwise have been, through the unfolding of events. And sometimes people make great blunders too...either through idiocy or through pure arrogance, or both...

... which we'll soon witness first hand.

The megalomaniacs in Congress seem hell-bent on achieving some form of immortal legacy for themselves - - - several have already publicly alluded to "making history". You've heard a few on TV - "We are going to make history." Their obsession with grandiose or extravagant actions in an attempt to make themselves famous is sickening.

I'm tired of those members in Congress (suffering from group narcissism) who's only concern is, not the welfare of the people, but of "making history". Their lack of empathy for the silent majority appears to be a psychopathological condition characterized by omnipotent and delusional opinions of themselves...drunk with power and pampering egotistical fantasies.

Humanitarians like Mother Teresa made great history. Pope John and Nelson Mandela made history. Bold military leaders like Dwight Eisenhower made history. Civil rights leaders like MLK made history. Great Presidents like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln made history....

... but not self-loving narcissists like Obama or those egotistical self-anointed elitists who's only ambition is JUST to "make history".

Adolf Hitler made history. Sudam Hussein made history. Charles Manson made history. What does it take to make history?

Ladies and gentleman, with our fearless leaders putting Healthcare before the economy, Cap & Trade before national security, the banks before us - - - we are witnessing history being made before our very eyes...

...made by the moronic actions of the worst and most out-of-touch Congress and administration that ever was in history!

Wall Street Bankers in the Hot Seat - Goldman Sachs Answers to Congress

The bankers of the apocalypse strode into the Congressional hearing room and formed a crooked line. They raised their hands haltingly, looking at one another as if to see whether the other guys were going to do it, too. It was one of the more indecisive swearings-in you will ever see on Capitol Hill.

The commissioners pressed the bankers on executive compensation, on managing risks, and on lending practices, keeping up a brisk pace while the witnesses fidgeted like busy people who all had planes or trains to catch.

Phil Angelides, Chairman of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, bore in on Lloyd C. Blankfein, Goldman Sachs’s chairman. He asked Mr. Blankfein to explain how his firm could have sold bundles of troubled mortgages at the same time it placed bets with Goldman’s own money that their value would fall.

Phil Angelides: “It sounds to me a little bit like selling a car with faulty brakes and then buying an insurance policy on the buyer of those cars.”

Mr. Angelides also dismissed Mr. Blankfein’s line about “professional investors” by saying that those same investors represented the savings of teachers and police officers.

Palin at Fox News - The Liberals Need to Speak Up!

The liberals have been taking pot shots at Sarah Palin again because she is now working at Fox News. But why? What are the liberals afraid of? - Video here

Criticism, honesty, and open debate is a good thing. It allows us to compare ideas and thoughts, and to expand our understanding of all we share...and to build and expand on those ideas for a better world in which we live.

But thoughts, ideas, and opinions must NOT be controlled by one ideology or a government that professes itself to be an open society.

The liberals control most of the newspapers and TV stations...they have many media outlets for which they can pontificate opine. Oh...and almost all of them have blogs too, just like me.

I don't want the ultra-liberals (or Marxists) to remain silent and unheard. On the contrary, I'd rather they shout their message from the top of the highest mountain so all can hear. I want the American people to know them well, and their agenda. For the liberals to remain silent and unaccounted for, would only be dangerous for the rest of us.(Such as Obama's "transparent" administration and the policies they want to sneak through Congress and force upon Americans.)

So why is it that "liberals" want to silence conservatives such as Palin, who only wish to exercise their Constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech? Isn't that rather un-American of them? I thought the liberals were all for civil liberties, the ones that have been so well fought for by the ACLU since the 1960's and SDS.

That's odd.

Or maybe the liberals just want to silence dissent when it's only the conservatives that they perceive as being wrong. But liberals (as a minority) must shout louder than anyone else, and talk over anyone else who speaks, just to have their shrill voices heard.

The louder and more obnoxious, the better. Rationality doesn't matter...except when it's only their perceived idea of what sanity, fairness, and justice might be.

Odd.

Yes liberals, speak up...please! We need to know what's on your mind, so we can take action to counter your morbid ideas about what you think the future of this great country should be like. We truly want to understand you better, so we can have empathy for your causes, no matter how bizarre or odd.

And they are very odd.

Notice I didn't call the liberals any names? But they call others names. But that's OK, I want to hear whatever they have to say. So you liberals (and Marxists)...please comment on my blog, so that I may better know your thoughts and ideas about my right to express MY opinions. I don't want to silence you, I want to hear you...to know you well.
