Congress Abandons the Long-term Unemployed

The Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (of Montana, whose panel oversees the unemployment benefits program) says: "I think 99 weeks is sufficient."

It's reported that unemployment costs this year could reach $200 billion (as compared to the U.S. $13.5 trillion economy or $1.2 trillion annual budget).

(20% of the workforce under is either not employed or under-employed...30 million people.)

As taxpayers, you all paid $780 billion in TARP for the banks like Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Bank of America...which doesn't include GM, GMAC, AIG, and Chrysler. Remember all the multi-million dollar parachutes and bonuses?

As taxpayers, you all paid $821 billion (and growing) for waste, fraud, and cronyism for a "Stimulus Package" that hasn't "saved or created" ONE single job...and millions went to districts that didn't even exist!

As taxpayers, your Congress just voted for Obama-Care at a cost of $1.2 trillion (just to start).

As taxpayers, you all paid over $2.3 trillion to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac...and they still need more.

As taxpayers, you paid several billion dollars more for all the other schemes like "Cash-for-Clunkers" and "Cash For Caulking".

Billions more was spent in earmarks (pork spending) for "bridges to nowhere" and local airports with two flights a day serving elitists.

And soon there will be a VAT tax and Cap-and-trade costs on energy too.

But Congress is whining about helping your neighbors in a time of financial crisis? Families who may have lived next door to you or people you once worked with?

Direct your rage at corruption in government and multi-national (American-based) corporations who out-sourced all the jobs - not at unemployed people!

I doubt a job with a "living wage" will be available anytime soon, because THERE IS NO LABOR SHORTAGE. I don't see any CEOs on CNBC complaining about not being able to find enough qualified help. If you see one, please let me know.

Instead, members of Congress (who are earning $174,000 a year) kicks us when we're down, without ever having walked in our shoes.

The next time they see a homeless man, they should think - - -"There but for the grace of God, go I."

And then dig into their weaselly pockets and give the poor guy a dollar...if they're not too cheap.

Check for updates here too....

Fox News: "Are U.S. Veterans also Lazy?"

Will somebody ask Fox News and the Republicans this?

A West Point graduate and Army Ranger named Joe has been unemployed for 14 months! He also holds an MBA in health care administration. He's just one of the hundreds of thousands of unemployed Iraq and Afghanistan veterans relying on unemployment checks nationwide.

A Tribute to Another Unemployed 99er

The skull above could have once belonged to someone's mother, sister, or wife. A loving, breathing, thinking woman who had emotions and feelings.

She once spoke with a slight accent, and made passionate, and sometimes playful, love with her husband Al. She smiled and laughed, and always looked lovingly into her husband's eyes. She was kind, honest, gentle, and charitable her whole life. She was well-liked and respected in her neighborhood. She rarely became angry or upset. She had many friends and family members who loved her very much. She had made plans for her future, her children's future, and her later years.

After working hard all her life as an assembly-line worker for a major aircraft company, she had looked forward to eventually saving enough money to finally retire...and to live out her "Golden Years" in well-deserved and comfortable peace...while watching her future grandchildren grow up. Her name was Sara "Daisy" Grahms.

But that was not to be. In 2008 she and her husband were laid off from their jobs. After 99 weeks they used up all of their unemployment benefits and life's savings while looking for work. Then they eventually lost the family house and car. Soon Sara and her family became homeless. Early in 2010 she had succumbed to the streets and died. She was only 55 years old.

To her family, Sara was the whole world, but to the rest of the world, she had been long forgotten...

...to them, Sara had been just a another "lazy" unemployed 99er.

(Burial and tombstone paid for by donations made to St. Michael's Catholic Church.)

Sara "Daisy" Grahms
Born January 1, 1955
Died April 16, 2010
Our mother and wife
We will always love you

99ers Tossed to the Curb like Old Beer Cans

Will the 99ers (those that used all 99 weeks of unemployment benefits) now be tossed to the curb like old beer cans?

Congress and the general public seem to be siding with corporate America - in that they know how desperate the jobless now are and will pay them 50% of what they previous earned before the Great Recession. In other words, millions of American citizens are expected to be a new class of people living in poverty. Educated and well-trained people are now supposed to work part-time and menial jobs and live near the poverty threshold, because the jobs that were lost, will only return gradually - - - and not in keeping pace with population growth. And those jobs will most likely be filled by younger and "better educated" people that are new to the workforce. Many (most?) might probably still be living with their parents today, and will be fresh out of college with no family to support.

"No Experience Necessary" - just better looks and/or better health...to be fed through the corporate meat grinder, until they too, become middle-aged, worthless, and forgotten.

The millions of middle-aged men and woman who lost their jobs now have no choice but to face their golden years with little to no chance of preparing for retirement...while the newly hired younger people will have a life-time to save and learn from their middle-aged predecessor's mistakes.

99ers and "older people" (40 to 65) will have to accept the fact that most will never recover economically...they are a newly discarded group of people who worked hard all their life breaking their backs, but now face their senior years with very little hope of maintaining any significant way to earn a reasonably comfortable living.

Hundreds of thousands will lose their homes, have their cars repossessed, and will be chided my "the enlightened ones" to start living within their means (Sage advice from those who still have jobs and are able to pay their rent).

Many 99ers have been accused of disparaging things, such as "lazy" or "ignorant" or "ill-prepared". They will be forgotten as the newer jobs become available. Their spouses and children - whole families - will be affected as this new class of American citizens struggle to survive in this flat economy. Unlike temporary migrant workers from another country who, when the work is gone, have a home to return to - the 99ers are already home and have no sympathy from their leaders in Washington, the media, or their fellow countrymen.

America has turned into a "survival of the fittest" state, and the 99ers will only be remembered as a tiny footnote in history 20 years from now, and maybe be briefly mentioned with some distain in a wikipedia article.

A Tier V and beyond (for many who soon may be homeless) is a infinitesimal slice of a $13 trillion economy when ordinary people need help from their country. Unemployment "benefits" is NOT a benefit, but only allows those people to simply survive. It's not "welfare"...these people worked and paid taxes all their life.

For better or worse, much of the country saw the Great Depression as something akin to a natural disaster, and people accordingly lowered their expectations for their standard of living.

The struggle over economic policy in the 1930's seems almost strikingly parallel to today's; an episode in the long, historical conflict between business participants in the market and anti-business academics.

There's abundant evidence that both the Republican Hoover and the Democrat Roosevelt unwittingly worsened the Great Depression. These two American leaders foolishly relied on the advice of elites, believing that the graduates of our best schools should manage the country.

Roosevelt gave free rein to the professors, until the start of the Second World War led him to realize that he would need the tycoons to help mobilize to defeat Hitler.

It seems that unemployed Republicans and Tea Party members will be voting for Democrats this Fall...

...if they want to survive.

Talk about splitting the Party!

GOP Calls Unemployed Workers "Lazy"

by Mike Papantonio for the www.huffingtonpost.com

Tom DeLay has lined up an entire cabal of GOP cretins like Rep. Dean Heller from Nevada and Steve King from Iowa, who have expressed their opinion that lazy, shiftless American workers are so thrilled to receive their unemployment checks that they have no incentive to look for work. Its no surprise that Republicans like DeLay were the ones most responsible for moving jobs out of the U.S. to sweatshop havens like Saipan and India. In fact, the little runt actually helped American corporations get tax breaks for outsourcing jobs.

It was also Tom DeLay's Republican brain trust who paved the way for our economic meltdown that has so many Americans out of work.

The DeLay, Heller, and King GOP crowd helped create an economy where there are 6 applicants for every 1 job. An economy where American productivity is up almost 10% while pay and benefits have continued to fall.

Tom DeLay and the GOP sheep who followed his lead created a service economy where 60 year olds who should be living out their golden years are working for 3rd world wages. They are flipping hamburgers at Wendy's and working as greeters for big box stores like Wal-Mart. We can only hope for the day when DeLay might be making those same kinds of wages making license plates in a Texas prison.

The reptile brains that drive the Republicans opposing benefit extensions apparently can't analyze the fact that a father gains no pleasure in telling his children that he is unemployed and will have to feed and clothe and house his family on $150 dollars a week when he was at one time bringing in $500 dollars a week. The Republicans call that man shiftless and lazy as if it brings him no pain to tell his family that they now live below the American poverty line.

Unemployment checks are not a get-rich-quick scheme. The Republicans who want to create a narrative of the deadbeat American worker hustling taxpayers need a reality check that reminds them that most politicos have lived for decades with taxpayers paying their way, plus:

- Their health care
- Their pensions

Those politicians want to think of themselves as living in some rarefied air where they serve as true public servants. It is as if they are unaware that they have morphed into neo-nut political hacks who are nothing more than wards of the state. That state that is paying their salary and benefits rarely gets anything in return.

- - - dEaD mAn wAlKiNg - - -

Are you a single and childless 50 year old man with only a high school diploma, has no family, and who has been unemployed for over 22 months? If so, then you're also a "99er".

You worked hard all your life, obeyed the law and paid your taxes. Then you were laid-off and now you're jobless.

You'll be vilified and called lazy. You'll be compared to welfare recipients. You'll be publicly shamed, and people who still have jobs will no longer want to associate with you...even those who were once your "friends". They won't even want their tax dollars paying for your unemployment benefits. You'll be isolated and alone, without a voice. You'll find no sympathy or empathy from the media or from Congress either.

You'll be a dead man walking.

Let's look at the current situation:

The stock market crashed in the fall of 2008 because of poor regulation and enforcement of existing laws by SEC over the financial industry (banks, hedge funds, and insurance companies).

See: "Repo 105"
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704508904575192430373566758.html

Also, because of their relationships to the Federal Housing Authority (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) and home mortgage loans, caused the housing market crash.

Going back over the last few years, we also saw a lot of out-sourcing of jobs by major U.S. corporations (calling themselves "multi-national") to Mexico, India, and China. Again, poor congressional management over foreign trade policies.

And on top of this, we have seen vastly increased congressional corruption, waste, fraud, and abuse. That's why America now has the Tea Party.

Last fall (in 2009) the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously approved the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations bill.

It provides $636.3 billion in new discretionary spending for the Department of Defense for functions under the Defense Subcommittee’s jurisdiction.

The bill funds an active duty strength of 1,425,000 and a reserve component end strength of 844,500 for a total of 2,269,500 active military personnel (that equals $53,917 per week, per soldier).

(No U.S.S. Obama?)

Before he recently passed away, Representative John P. Murtha (D-PA), who had been voted one of the "Most Corrupt Members of Congress", used to chair the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. He had ties to lobbying firms and defense contractors under federal investigation - he also had ties to defense executives and former military personnel convicted of skimming money from government contracts. John Murtha was included in CREW’s 2006, 2007, and 2008 reports on congressional corruption.

On the other hand, if in 2010 the government paid all 15 million jobless people $400 a week in unemployment benefits, it would cost half that amount...and there would be no need for corrupt lobbyists and defense contractors, and there would be no wasteful spending. All money would go directly into the economy (instead of someone's pocket) - and would be immediately spent on necessities for struggling families (rather than being paid to the hookers walking the streets in Washington DC).

But it's easier to beat down the voices of the unemployed who, unlike defense contractors, don't have fat-cat lobbyists in Washington DC to represent their interests.

You're too old to find work, but too young to retire

Been out of work for a year or more? You've probably already lost your health insurance, (who can afford COBRA?) Has the stress of your financial burdens affected your health? Getting sick could be a death sentence for you.

The government has already raised the age for Social Security from 65 to 67+ for many already, and are going to raise it again soon...so don't hold your breath waiting to get any older if you can't find a job soon (only 1 for every 6 out of work).

Welfare ("General Assistance") isn't survivable for most people, and to qualify, you must go a full 30 days with no income. Then you might only qualify for food stamps (about $200 a month) and about $2500 a YEAR in general assistance. But to qualify, assets can not exceed $2,000 - so you would have to get rid of the family car to qualify. There are some medical benefits though...but you would not qualify at all if you're single and/or have no kids.

If you have pension that you're vested in, or an IRA or 401k, you usually have to wait until you're at least 55 to take an "early retirement", but you would also be heavily taxed and severally penalized in the amount you receive.

If you're long-term unemployed or in the 50 to 65 year range, you'll most likely get passed over for a job for a much younger and "healthier" person...

...or you'll be considered "over qualified",

...or you won't have the mandatory college degree that someone fresh out of school will have.

There are many reasons they can find for not hiring you, and age discrimination is usually impossible to prove.

If you didn't serve in the military, you won't get a preference for civil and government employment either (who now require college degrees just to work in the mail room).

Someone Agrees:

99 weeks sounds ridiculous until you study the numbers and find out that a good many now on unemployment are in the 48-60 age range, whose jobs have literally disappeared and are never coming back. Employers have always been slow to hire so-called "older workers" and they continue to be this way today. Many of these older workers have worked virtually all their adult lives, without ever collecting a dime of unemployment benefits. Now they are too young to retire, and too old for any sort of meaningful college retraining. In this case, I think we owe the people who worked hard and paid their taxes a decent helping hand. Unemployment is not welfare. You actually had to WORK and pay TAXES to collect. While I would not think this is an excellent idea long-term, but at this time, there are some people who need our help.

Best prospect: A 25 year old with a bachelor's degree who spent 4 years in the military, and then got "juiced in" by an influential parent to work in a congressional assistant's position...like for someone who heads the Defense Subcommittee...someone like the late Representative John P. Murtha. You won't need any experience or common sense...just a piece of paper and a recommendation.

Worst prospect: A single and childless 50 year old man with only a high school diploma, and who has no family, and has been unemployed for over a year. That is a dead man walking.

"Democrats need to pass these extensions with or without Republican support and do so at a fast pace. However they do need the support of one Republican each time and that Republican usually has been Olympia Snowe (R-ME) until Scott Brown (R-Mass) entered the picture. Scott Brown may be a Republican but at least he steps in when needed and breaks from party lines and sees what is best for the country as far as the issue of unemployment insurance extensions are concerned."

Job Search - http://infoployment.com/SearchJobsNow.html

May 26, 2010 - Mention of extending the "qualifying date" but not for 99ers.

"In addition to sustaining some of the neediest families, safety-net spending in the form of unemployment insurance and health insurance subsidies helps the economy as a whole by circulating cash into local communities and helping businesses avert further job cuts. Each $1 billion of unemployment compensation generates an estimated $1.63 billion to $2.15 billion of additional gross domestic product (GDP). If the unemployed did not receive insurance benefits, then their reduced consumption would be a serious drag on the economy, reducing demand for businesses’ goods and services, in turn leading businesses to reduce investments and lay off additional workers. Simply put, allowing unemployment benefits to expire would set off another round of disastrous payroll losses and imperil the entire recovery. May 22, 2010 - HR 4213 does not provide for additional weeks of benefits, something thousands of jobless folks petitioned for in a grassroots effort.

"Senators will have a chance to offer amendments, which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is encouraging them NOT TO DO! (since any changes would require another vote in the House). Reid will have to file one cloture motion to overcome a Republican filibuster, setting up a final vote near the end of the week."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/21/senate-set-for-another-fi_n_585170.html

From CBO Website:

"CBO estimates that those policies would raise output cumulatively between 2010 and 2015 by $0.70 to $1.90 per dollar of total budgetary cost. CBO also estimates that the policies would add 8 to 19 cumulative years of full-time-equivalent employment in 2010 and 2011 per million dollars of total budgetary cost."

"Extending additional unemployment benefits would directly help those who would otherwise exhaust their unemployment benefits between March and December of this year. Households receiving unemployment benefits tend to spend the additional benefits quickly, making this option both timely and cost-effective in spurring economic activity and employment."

"...policies that increase the resources of families with lower income, few assets, and poor credit would probably have a larger impact on consumption spending. Because of the extent of job losses and declines in asset prices in this recession, more families probably fit that description now, than was the case in the immediate aftermath of many previous recessions."

http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/112xx/doc11255/Unemployment_Testimony.shtml

"Policies that would have the largest effects on output and employment in 2010 and 2011 per dollar of budgetary cost would be those that could be implemented relatively quickly or targeted toward people whose consumption tends to be restricted by their income - for example, boosting aid to the unemployed."

http://cboblog.cbo.gov/?p=475

The CBO doesn't expect unempoyement to back to 5% until 2015

FAX Obama: 2024562461

HR 4213 did nothing to help those who have already lost their unemployment insurance.

Help us Mr. President! Sign an "executive order" to extend our benefits!

We are the long term unemployed who have been out of benefits for months and WE NEED YOUR HELP - NOW. Please don't let Congress take yet another vacation without extending unemployment benefits for the millions who have been without them for months.

But if they do... We NEED an Executive Order from you to do what Congress quite obviously cannot or will not do.

Thank You

From David Atkinson - FaceBook - Tier-V-to-Survive:

Being a fellow "99er" I really feel the pain. My benefits ended last month and with no income for the past three weeks, the rent can't be paid for June. I am selling what few assets I have left just to have a roof over my head. There are so many of us out here like this and we're having to sit back and watch "petty" Washington politicians completely ignore a Tier V solution to the problem. The fact is, we live our job searches 24/7 with the same results...no response to our painstaking efforts. What's the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing every day with the same result (or in this case, no result). Washington needs to get off their proverbial butts and fix this exponentially growing problem ASAP or face retribution in the fall elections. Doesn't matter which side of the aisle they sit on, any incumbent should be very concerned for their political future.

Great article here: "What ever became of welfare moms?"

Long lines of gloomy people in business suits at a jobs fair. Foreclosure signs on tidy suburban lawns. Adults moving into their parents' basement. In the news these days, the face of poverty is middle class, educated and often married: the hard-working, play-by-the-rules victims of the ongoing financial crisis...

But what about the people who were poor before the crisis?

Deja Vu?

Even with the extended benefits, many people are dropping out of the continuing claims number because their benefits have been exhausted. Down that road leads to serious poverty.

Despite the good news on initial claims, it is highly likely that unemployment will continue to rise.

How do people cope with being out of work for an extended period of time, especially after the benefits have run out? Well, first they tap their savings - but given the extremely low savings rates over the past several years, those are likely depleted very fast. In the past, people might have tapped the equity in their houses to get by, but the housing ATM long ago shut down.

The only thing left is to run up the credit card balance. However, when they get maxed-out, the only resort is to default and go into bankruptcy. Rapidly increasing credit card defaults are going to be a serious problem for banks with big exposures to credit cards.

NOW!!!

Too many people who recently lost their jobs and are collecting STATE benefits don't yet realize how severe the job market really is. Just like the 99ers, they too think that eventually they'll find work...

...and just like the 99ers, they will also be in for a rude surprise when they see their benefits dwindle without even receiving a call-back for a real job interview.

These are the people that also need to start sighing the petition...

...and become more active in the TIER V movement. Waiting until the last minute when they're "high-and-dry" won't help them much then. They need to act in unison NOW with the on-going drive, to produce mass numbers.

27,041 (last count as of this post) on the current petition is puny compared to how many are actually losing these vital benefits every week. Wait until June 2...oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RUNNING ON EMPTY ~

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on
Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

America in Crisis - Congress Must Choose: Unemployment Benefits or Homelessness

Everybody on TV and in the political rallies are saying how concerned they are about the future of our country. But those people still have jobs, so they can AFFORD to be concerned. The jobless, they don't have time to be concerned about the future of this country - because they're too busy being concerned about their own immediate futures - about how they'll pay the rent and how they'll feed their kids. The ones WITH jobs say they're concerned about the country, but aren't the jobless a part of that country?

Too many "working Americans" (such as members of Congress and those in the media) associate joblessness and unemployment benefits with "welfare". They always want to compare a person who has worked for 30 years to someone who have NEVER worked a day in their life.

And the ones who just lost their jobs paid income taxes, and maybe property taxes too ALL THOSE YEARS!

First, imagine dropping your grandmother off to sleep on a sidewalk...

...being homeless doesn't mean having to be a mentally ill drug-addict. A homeless person is no longer just your typical "alcoholic vagrant" or "lazy panhandler" anymore - - - because those nice folks you'll be seeing on the street were once your next-door neighbors.

Almost 1/5th of the U.S. workforce (* 30 million people) is unemployed. Of those, about half (15 million people) at one time or another qualified for and/or are collecting unemployment benefits. The majority of those jobless people are regular American workers who recently lost their jobs through no fault of their own during "The Great Recession". Many have been out of work for over a year or more - and over half, longer than 6 months.

Republicans don't want to fund benefits for the jobless because the don't consider it to be an "emergency".

But joblessness IS an emergency. Extending federal unemployment benefits IS an emergency.

There are only 4 other "emergencies" that may be worse than joblessness (where some form of government help may be needed):

1) Nuclear, chemical, or biological attack
2) Cancer or other severely debilitating illness or injury
3) Home invasion, kidnapping or natural disaster
4) Someone's house burns down without insurance or it goes into foreclosure

These emergencies define the health and welfare of the nation - collectively, as a State and/or as the individual.

What else could be defined as an "emergency" for an average American citizen living in the United States?

- Extended federal unemployment benefits = 1/10th of 1% of the annual U.S. GDP.

- Military spending, schools/teachers, police and other local services, government and union pensions, Social Security and Medicare are the biggest drain on the economy...NOT Federal unemployment benefits. The funding for extended unemployment benefits for the jobless would be minuscule in relation to the budget, deficit and national debt.

- Federal unemployment benefits are spent immediately for necessities, and the money goes directly into the economy.

- Federal unemployment benefits for the health and welfare of American citizens should take precedent over any other type of "foreign concerns".

The jobless, just like the homeless, will soon disappear from the public radar after their unemployment benefits expire. It's already beginning to happen as it did with the last Bureau of Labor and Statistics jobless report. Those who used all 99 weeks of benefits weren't counted in the last reported unemployment figure, and the official unemployment rate remained "unchanged" at 9.7%

Those people weren't even a number anymore.

Eventually, they too, will become homeless and like the homeless, will just fade into oblivion. They won't find a job earning a "living wage" because all the economists are saying these jobs were permanently lost.

...and once someone has lost their car and home, and are living on the street or sleeping in a tent, one just doesn't wake up, make coffee, get showered and dressed, and drive to a job interview.

Factoids:

The National Coalition for the Homeless reports on the growing number of tent cities across the United States. (44% of people experiencing homeless in America are unsheltered.)
PDF file: http://www.nationalhomeless.org/publications/Tent%20Cities%20Report%20FINAL%203-10-10.pdf

- Average length of stay in emergency shelters is 50 to 70 days
- Average length of stay in "transitional" housing is 175 to 223 days
- Homeless population is 42% African-American and 39% are white
- 26% mentally ill, 13% physically disabled, 19% domestic violence, 13% veterans, 2% HIV positive
- 94% of people living on the streets were single adults

Homelessness is beginning to increase among elderly adults - Urban areas have the highest rate of homelessness.

Some analysts place the number of homeless Americans at 3.5 million, with 1.4 million being children.

H.R. 4213 - "The American Workers, State, and Business Relief Act of 2010" (AWSBRA) was legislated on March 10, 2010. It was supposed to extend unemployment insurance benefits through December 31, 2010 for millions of people - and the "Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act" (COBRA) would also be extended with this legislation.

But the Republicans want it "paid for" rather than passing the bill as "emergency spending". Do you agree with Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) that an extension for Americans (that could soon be homeless) should first be "paid", or do you think that the measure should be considered "emergency spending" and not be offset in the federal budget?

And let's not forget to applaud the Republicans and Tom Coburn specifically for voting "YEA" to authorize the Secretary of the Treasury to create the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP or H.R. 4213) to bail out the banks and other financial institutions such as AIG and Goldman Sachs.

Do you remember the greedy multi-million bonuses for the very bankers who created this depression? (Google "credit default swaps") But the Republicans and Tom Coburn would rather let the jobless, who are the victims of this depression, go homeless!

Speaking of which...

UPDATE: April 16,2010:
SEC Accuses Goldman Sachs of Fraud

"The government has accused Goldman Sachs of defrauding investors by failing to disclose conflicts of interest in mortgage investments it sold as the housing market was faltering. The SEC alleges Goldman failed to disclose that one of its clients helped create - and then bet against - subprime mortgage securities that Goldman sold to investors.(AIG and credit-default-swaps)

And Here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/17/business/17goldman.html

And don't forget mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac who account for about 90 percent of all home loans being made, meaning Congress is most likely the cause of the crash of the home finance market, and maybe this depression.

Paladinette - Unemployed Zealot (Interview and links)

Extended Benefits Explained Here

99'ers Go Here

From www.free-press-release.com

New 99er Web Site - http://tobuds.com/99er

With great determination, facts in hand and the support of millions of unemployed Americans, a single white female held her ground among the Angry White Men on the Rick Biesada Show.

Paladinette debunked the theory that the deficit is too large to help the innocent victims of this recession by stating: "As for the budget deficits, they will never be brought under control if Americans are not put back to work. Unemployment drives deficits by depriving the government of tax revenues and dramatically increasing the costs of safety-net programs and other public services. Putting Americans to work will ultimately make it much easier to begin bringing the deficits down. BUT until we are back to work we need those benefits to survive."

During the overwhelmingly conservative talk show, Paladinette was asked if she was a conservative or a liberal, to which she answered "I am an American!"

She went on to tell the story of how the bill (H.R. 4213) that was recently delayed in Congress for "extending vital unemployment benefits through the end of this year" does NO SUCH THING.

She went on to explain that "IT DOES NOT ADD 1 single week of additional Jobless benefits for anyone! All that H.R. 4213 does as far as unemployment benefits is help the shorter term unemployed. In truth it does absolutely NOTHING for those of us who have been diligently looking for a job ANY job, no matter how little it pays for over two years now."

"The LONG TERM unemployed are the ones who need the most help. We have already lost our homes, our credit is shot, and our retirement savings is gone. And what does the Government do? They give the greedy wall street bankers over $2 trillion dollars so they can give out huge bonuses and maintain their company jets. And WHY? Because between campaign and lobbying money the Banks own Washington."

In the blogosphere of jobless Americans, Paladinette is making a name for herself as being a tireless advocate for JOBS and until those jobs arrive, Jobless benefits for the millions who have already exhausted all tiers of benefits available.

You can follow her endeavors "Tier 5 To SURVIVE" here:

Fox News Gets it Wrong Again - There's 15 MIllion Unemployed!

Why has the news media been downplaying the unemployment numbers?

It's bad enough that some news organizations have insulted the jobless and called them lazy; but to report almost half of the actual unemployment figure is downright ignoring the facts (and adding more injury on top of insult).

Is this sloppy news reporting, or does the media want the unemployed to just "go away"?

This morning the last segment on Fox and Friends featured two authors of the book "Thank you for firing me!" (by Candice Reed and Kitty Martini).

Near the bottom of the scrolling bar on the TV screen it flashed "8.2 million unemployed".

Somebody needs to tell Fox News that there are at LEAST 15 million jobless people!

If we are to believe Fox News as a reputable "news" program, how could they get a fact like the number of unemployed SO WRONG?

They didn't bother counting 6.8 million jobless people!!!

And according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it could be as high as 30 million because half don't even file for benefits!
Source:
http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2000/06/art2abs.htm

"You lost your job. You're not alone. 31 million Americans face the same challenges."
http://www.unionofunemployed.com/

Didn't the Democrats just pass Obama-Care™ to insure 30 million more people? Does this include all those who have lost theirs due to mass layoffs?

In regards to the jobless, lately Fox News has been behaving much like members of Congress and the general public have been acting ...a bit "stand-offish".

It almost reminds me a little of how people with cancer are sometimes treated...like if you look at them or touch them you will catch something. Or if you get fired from your job and your co-workers (and friends) will disown you for fear of also being fired for associating with you. Or if you slip and fall on the dance floor and your dance partner just looks away embarrassed as if they don't know you (rather than helping you up). Or they might stop e-mailing or calling you, as if some bad "Karma" might come their way too. People WITH jobs will NEVER sympathize with those who don't (until they too are also unemployed).

I'm tired of seeing pretty people dressed to the "nines" on TV and smiling with big white teeth while reporting the jobless data as if they weren't even real people, but just boring statistics (a statistic that Fox News only uses to bash the Democrats with, not because of any empathy they feel for the near-homeless).

It's almost as though they want all those jobless people to just disappear and become lost in society...to just go quietly into the night.

Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Latest Unemployment Numbers: Links from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics

From: Horvath, Fran - Bureau of Labor and Statistics
To: Bud Meyers
Cc: cesinfo ; CPSInfo
Sent: Friday, April 09, 2010 11:00 AM

Bud,

I am responding to your email to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The official unemployment rate for the United States is produced from data collected in the Current Population Survey, a national sample survey conducted each month. The estimate of unemployment is principally based on the survey responses of individuals to questions regarding their jobseeking efforts in the past 4 weeks; no part of the unemployment rate estimation is based on whether people receive unemployment benefits or not. If you were in our survey, and were actively looking for work, and available to take a job, you would be counted as "unemployed" regardless whether you receive unemployment benefits or not. Our survey does not usually ask about unemployment insurance benefits at all.

You might be interested in the publication "How the Government Measures Unemployment". http://stats.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm

That publication explains:

"Some people think that to get these figures on unemployment the Government uses the number of persons filing claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits under State or Federal Government programs. But some people are still jobless when their benefits run out, and many more are not eligible at all or delay or never apply for benefits. Indeed, typically less than a third of the unemployed file claims for UI benefits. So, quite clearly, UI information cannot be used as a source for complete information on the number of unemployed."

Individuals are considered unemployed as long as they meet the requirements provided in the document above, even if they have exhausted their unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. In fact, the majority of the unemployed are not receiving such benefits, either because the benefits have ended or because they did not qualify for UI payments.

See, for example: http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2000/06/art2abs.htm

Hence, benefits are not a criteria for determination of unemployment in the CPS. Data on the number of UI claimants are produced from administrative records from the state UI programs. These estimates are released separately from the survey data on total unemployment and are not used as a measure of total unemployment.

The latest national unemployment release estimated there were 15.0 million unemployed persons in the United States in March 2010. The unemployment insurance continuing claims data released yesterday by the Employment and Training Administration counted 4.55 million persons receiving unemployment insurance in the week ended March 30.

The addition of the temporary Census workers was a significant fact that was mentioned 3 times in the latest Employment Situation news release. (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm ) The staff on our establishment data side has carefully documented the counts of Census workers each month, as well as the month-by-month pattern in previous Census years. You can find that information at:
http://www.bls.gov/ces/cescensusworkers.pdf.

The Employment Situation News Release also includes a table each month showing a range of alternative measures of labor underutilization. Table a-15 of the release includes the broadest measure, U-6, which includes persons who are employed part time for economic reasons as well as those discouraged about looking for work. You can find the latest information at:
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t15.htm

The Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics meets with the Joint Economic Committee on most months, and a discussion of the U-6 value takes place in every meeting.

I hope this information is useful to you. Should you have questions about the national unemployment rate, please contact us at: cpsinfo@bls.gov

Sincerely,

Francis Horvath

Critics of the Jobless - Why Benefits Should Be Extended

"Once I built a tower up to the sun, brick and rivet and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?"

~ Yip Harburg

It disturbs me to hear critics complaining about extending unemployment benefits. And to hear them make remarks such as, "Maybe if you cut off their benefits, they'll go find a job."

These critics obviously have no clue whatsoever as to the suffering their fellow citizens are experiencing. Most have worked hard all their lives, and are not lazy or living "high-on-the-hog" at everybody else's expense. (Unemployment benefits barely pays above the poverty level).

It make me angry to hear the critic's naive advice to the unemployed, "Just take another job for less money and cut back on your expenses...sometimes you just have to sacrifice. Life isn't fair."

Well let me tell them, it's not quite as simple as they perceive the situation to be. If they took the time to think, maybe they'd better understand.

There are not enough "living wage" jobs available to help the current jobless situation. As it is now, there is only ONE job for every 6 that are jobless...and it probably pays minimum wage.

Those who lost their jobs just can't just cut their expenses in half and take a part-time job at McDonald's to survive. Especially people who have already "grown up" and moved out of their parent's house.

Failure to Launch - Tripp is a 35 year-old who still lives with his parents. And who can blame him? It's free, he's got a great room, and mom does the laundry. Desperate to get him out of the house, his parents hire a gorgeous woman to give him a little push. They just didn't expect Tripp would push back!

In reality, life is more like this:

People who've already graduated from school, got married, had children, and worked for an employer for a given amount of time, are usually locked in to car payments and/or leases and mortgages and/or rental agreements.

It's easy for someone who's still living with their mom an dad to tell others to "stop living above your means", but that's easier said than done kid. (Dad's probably paying for your car and health insurance, and for your tuition and dorm room as I write this...so you couldn't possibly understand what real life is all about.)

One can't just simply sell their 3-bedroom house and move in to a 1-bedroom apartment if the house is worth less than when they first bought it. And one can't just call the bank and ask that they send a repo-man to take back the family car, so as to purchase a cheaper vehicle.

It doesn't work that way.

No bank is going to give someone a "cheaper" mortgage or a "cheaper" car loan if they just defaulted on their previous loans, because now they're a credit risk and they don't have a job. They can't even rent an apartment because their credit score is now screwed - and no one will rent an apartment to them if they can't show any source of income.

Most people probably don't have a year's worth of cash in their savings account either (just like the critics don't), and if they did, it would have already been diminished after being out of work for over a year or two.

And many other people don't have relatives or friends that they can just move in with...not even to sleep in someone's garage or basement. (If they lost their car, they won't even have THAT to sleep in.)

"There is no doubt that with this "unprecedented" number being dropped from the unemployment benefit roles, the need for emergency services and shelter will be on the rise."
http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org

Recently on the History Channel I saw homeless encampments near the construction sites at the base of Golden Gate Bridge as it was being built during the Great Depression...the jobless were waiting for workers to become injured or fall to their deaths, knowing that a job had just become available.
(Notice the Christmas tree? Pathetic, isn't it?)

And besides, let's just say that someone had a computer science degree and worked in I.T. making $80,000 a year for the last 5 years...McDonalds wouldn't hire them because they're over qualified...even if someone were able to make this huge and humiliating leap backwards to take just ANY job, knowing it wouldn't pay enough to live on for even the most basic needs.

And if someone proudly worked hard in the construction trade for the last 30 years and was then laid-off, they'd be discriminated against because of their age - and would most probably be passed over for a much younger and "fit" person.

Read some REAL stories of people trying to survive this economy:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/unemployment/936530-proof-unemployed-need-tier-v-5.html

If you were a pretty young woman, YOU might find a job doing anything you wanted (like as a casino cocktail waitress). You might drive home after work and gawk at the day-laborers standing on the side of the road on a hot and humid day, waiting for a job. You might even shout out your car window at them, "Hey you lazy bum...get a damn job!"

And you might be just like all the other critics, not realizing that in a short time, you too could be in a desperate situation (through no fault of your own).

...and maybe you would find sympathy for others who were less fortunate than yourself, because you just might end up being lonely and living on the street or in a tent city yourself some day.

Don't think it's possible? See this:

What they're NOT Saying about Jobless Numbers

Tier V UPDATES Here - If there ever IS a Tier V

April 8, 2010 - People who exhausted their Tier IV extended unemployment benefits last week (after 99 weeks) were NOT included in the new jobless report issued by the U.S. Department of Labor today. You don't exist anymore!

Also: Many people who have been out of work for a year are picking up work as temps or part-timers, unaware that state agencies will recalculate their unemployment benefits and use their most recent work history and pay level - and because their most recent wages are much lower than the wages they earned in their prior fulltime job, they are facing substantial cuts in their weekly unemployment benefits.

Today the government reported that the jobless claims unexpectedly rose, with "weekly initial jobless claims" increasing to 460,000 - but the U.S. labor Department is also saying that "continuing claims dropped by 131,000 to 4,550,000 - the lowest of the year."

The Obama administration is sugar-coating the REAL numbers.

I'm guessing that those 131,000 people just lost their Tier IV extended unemployment benefits last week (as of April 5) and are no longer being counted as real people anymore.

Since the middle of 2008, two federal government sponsored extended unemployment benefit programs (the "extended benefits" and "EUC 2008") have been increasing, while traditional (State) unemployment benefits rolls, have been slightly descreasing.

Currently there are some 5.8 million people receiving federal extended unemployment benefits (Tier I through IV).

Taken together with the latest 5.2 million people that are currently counted as receiving traditional (State) continued unemployment benefits, there are well over 11 million people on state and federal unemployment rolls.

Add another 11 million people who are NOT on the state and federal unemployment rolls (like those who just exhausted their benefits) and we have a 20% national unemployment rate - as high as it was during the Great Depression!

That's what the government is NOT saying...and it's being quietly kept a secret, because those who still have jobs, fear their taxes might go up even more if a Tier V is added. (Not realizing that this is a $15 trillion economy, and unemployment benefits for their fellow countrymen is only one tenth of one percent of the gross domestic product; and won't have any serious effect on the economy.)

The ones who once received extended unemployment benefits (Tier I to IV) and have exhausted their benefits (as of April 5 and/or after 99 weeks) are now a "non-statistic" (which is worse than just being a plain number, because you no longer have an income!)

NOTE: If approximately 150,000 to 200,000 people a week (from this point forward) continue to lose Tier IV extended unemployment benefits, and while at the same time, approximately 150,000 to 200,000 people a week file new a "weekly initial jobless claim", then the government can say the unemployment rate is "unchanged".

Think of a conveyor belt, with the newly unemployed getting on at the same time that those with exhausted benefits are falling off.

Meanwhile, a whole bunch of penguins will be going homeless.

Latest Figures: Unemployment Rates in U.S. - February 2010

NOTE: This does not include those who do no collect unemployment benefits.

FCC and Net Neutrality: Obama, Censorship, and Glenn Beck

UPDATE: May 9, 2010 - Obama Administration Takes Over the Internet!

Does Obama want to silence political disenters with internet censorship? Just as China does with Google? Did you watch Glenn Beck today?

What is Google's position on Net Neutrality?

March 31st, 2010 - AT&T calls Google a hypocrite on Net Neutrality:

(If you understand the jargon, please let me know what it all means in simple English.)

How is this related to the censorship of Fox News, conservative radio hosts, and common bloggers?

Is Obama trying to shut Glenn Beck down?

Just a few weeks ago, the ongoing debate over proposed net neutrality rules under consideration by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) appeared to have taken a turn for the worse. At least as far as net neutrality proponents were concerned. But, with President Obama’s left flank increasingly uneasy with the direction he is taking as the midterm election approaches, observers say he may be aiming to shore up his base by tilting leftwards on the issue, one that flies below the radar of most Americans.

"The arguments made by advocates of so-called net neutrality regulations have been proven false by nearly a decade of experience since their concerns were first raised. The Internet is a remarkable free market success story, and the vast majority of Internet users are not clamoring for regulation. Self-styled consumer groups asking for regulation actually represent an extreme left-wing ideology that is hostile to free-market capitalism and puts its trust in government. That is not the position of the "grassroots" or most American Internet users. I urge you to reject new regulations and allow the free-market Internet to continue flourishing."

Unemployment: Bottom of the List for Obama (UPDATES)

What Obama is most reluctant to discuss: His "progressivism", taxes, and most of all...extended unemployment benefits for the jobless.

Have you ever heard him mention TIER V even once?

~Extended Unemployment Benefits and Tier V Updates Here~

When unemployment benefits expire, will these people no longer be counted by the government any longer? Or will the unemployed just be left alone to rot on the vine, disappear off the radar, and be forgotten by the news media and the general public?

Unemployment remains a major problem for America, but the Obama administration has done little, if anything, in the way of "stimulating" the economy - - - and has in fact, only made it worse.

(I won't even bother mentioning the waste and fraud that by now, has become common knowledge and widely reported - or about the districts that don't exist.)

Rather than address the unemployment issue (as Obama had promised in his State of the Union Address), he had instead plowed ahead with healthcare and is now moving on to other ideological and job-killing policies. But in the meantime, 17.5% of the country is unemployed and Congress has allowed unemployment benefits to expire as of Easter Sunday (April 4).

Charles Schwab (a bipartisan investment bank), commenting on the latest jobless report released by the Department of Labor, said in a newsletter that the number of the long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) increased by 414,000 over the month to 6.5 million.

The Wall Street Journal reports the average length of the long-term unemployed rose to an average of 31 weeks, the highest since record keeping began in 1948.

The number of persons working part time for economic reasons (individuals working part time because their hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job) rose to 9.1 million in March.

Over 10 million people are dependent on either state or federal unemployment benefits as of April 5, 2010 - and millions more families are struggling by holding down 2 and 3 menial and low-paying jobs just to survive (like flipping burgers, jobs that teenagers once held while attending school).

* 10 million does not reflect the total unemployed - those who didn't qualify for benefits and new people entering the job market such as graduating students, personnel leaving military service, and from immigration (and also those, as the government calls them, "discouraged" people.)

* In the past, when people whose benefits expired, whether they had a job or not, were dropped from the government unemployment statistics and NOT COUNTED (and some people were most likely later added to the local "homeless statistics", or these people just "disappeared" and became lost in society.)

The government claimed that private employers accounted for most of the gains in jobs last month...saying temporary government hiring for the 2010 census did not pad the figures as much as economists had forecast. The unemployment rate (as reported by the government) remained at 9.7 percent for the third consecutive month. (Hogwash)

The New York Times writes that "consumer spending accounts for the majority of economic activity in the country." So it would re-enforce the argument that the cost of unemployment benefits to taxpayers is minuscule compared to the overall the budget; and that the money goes immediately back into the economy.

According to CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER, (a Fox News Syndicated Columnist: "This is a $15 trillion economy. The bill you mentioned, the jobs bill, is one tenth of one percent of the gross domestic product. It's not going to have any serious effect on the economy."

The government's boasts of rising stock prices (i.e. DOW Jones) that it's proof of an economic recovery is a false measure of the economical activity (GDP - replacing 2009 inventories) - it has little to do with unemployment. If corporations cut back on their work-force from lack of customer demand, and hire part-time workers instead of full-time workers to avoid other expenses like healthcare, and demand increased production from current their employees in the form of intimidation, the company can still make a profit with it's adjusted balance sheets.

Selling or manufacturing less widgets with equally less company expenses and full-time employees, companies (both large and small) can still maintain their profit ratios. CEOs aren't cutting their salaries in half in order for the company to survive, and stockholders aren't demanding that they do so. For the government to attack the CEOs salaries of government controlled companies such as GM (and demand them to appear before Congress) are only publicity stunts to deflect government's blame for the housing collapse and poor regulation of the major banks (such as Goldman Sachs)...but a few of the real causes of the U.S. economic crash.

After losing at least 8 million jobs since the recession began (when unemployment was already around 5%) The New York Times says the Labor Department reported last Friday that employers added 162,000 jobs last month (for a more accurate report, the WSJ says 123,000).

The administration is claiming that nationwide, the unemployment rate held steady at 9.7 percent; but one-third of the growth came from the government's hiring of 48,000 temporary workers for the 2010 Census.

The New York Times reminded us that the economy needs to add more than 100,000 jobs a month just to absorb new entrants into the labor market, let alone provide a livelihood for the 15 million Americans already looking for work.

Federal Reserve officials expect the jobless rate to remain above 9% through this year and above 8% throughout 2011. So, will there be extended unemployment benefits for these millions of people? Or will they just rot on the vine, disappear off the radar, be forgotten by the news media, and no longer be counted any more?

"We are beginning to turn the corner," President Obama recently said of the economy while speaking in Charlotte, N.C. - - - he called it "the best news we’ve seen on the job front in more than two years."

What is HE smoking? Unlike President Clinton, my guess is that Obama inhales.

Senator Kyl wisely backtracks - Calls for Extending Benefits

More than 200,000 to lose jobless benefits today.

For each additional week that the program isn't extended, another 200,000 workers will also see an interruption in benefits.

Senate Democrats said they'll try to pass an extension of the program that can be applied retroactively once Congress is back in session. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has scheduled a vote on cloture to end debate on the short-term extension for April 12.

But only a 30-day extension is being talked about.

The economy needs to add more than 100,000 jobs a month just to absorb new entrants into the labor market, let alone provide a livelihood for the 15 million Americans already looking for work. Without constant, robust growth, the unemployment rate won’t budge.

Indeed, the Congressional Budget Office has projected that the rate will hover around 10 percent for the rest of the year.

The situation looks worse for the long-term unemployed. The average length of time the jobless have been out of work has reached 31.2 weeks, the longest period since the government began keeping records in 1948.

Today on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) called for extending unemployment insurance - which is set to run out tomorrow for many Americans - to help the millions of Americans who are out of work.

I suppose that a least someone in Congress has heard about the millions of people who would soon suffer. The blogs, the FaceBook and Twitter pages, and hundreds of news articles have been addressing this for quite a while, long before Congress went on their care-free two-week vacation.

(Healthcare, their priority, really wore them down.)

Many jobless people lost their benefits today (their last week of Tier IV extended benefits). Happy Easter to all those poor folks!

CHRIS WALLACE: Senator Kyl, will Republicans support more economic stimulus such as more aid to states, extending unemployment benefits, more tax incentives for small business?

KYL: There are really two questions inherent in that, Chris. We will have to do things like extending unemployment benefits because unemployment is so high, 9.7 percent, 15 million Americans unemployed. But that’s not a job stimulator. So we will do those things to take care of the families that are suffering right now.

Last month, Kyl had said that unemployment benefits dissuade people from job-hunting "because people are being paid even though they’re not working. Continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work."

Hopefully the other boneheads in Congress (mostly Republicans) will get the message...especially since many of the unemployed are either Republican, Tea Party members, or conservative Independents.
