When Barack was once called "Barry" - The Rarely Told Story
by Bud Meyers
Barry Soetoro AKA Barack Hussein Obama II or Barack Hussein Obama Jr. (Junior) was born August 4, 1961 at Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii to MOTHER: Stanley Ann Dunham, an American of mainly English descent from Wichita, Kansas and FATHER: Barack Obama, Sr., a Luo from Nyang’oma Kogelo, Nyanza Province, Kenya.
Obama's Grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, pose with Obama's mother Ann in a photograph probably taken in the 1950s. Born in Kansas, Obama's maternal grandparents lived in four states before settling in Hawaii.

Obama's parents met in 1960 in a Russian language class at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father Obama Sr., was a foreign student on scholarship, and made history himself by being the University's first African (not African-American) student. At the age of 23, Obama Sr. had come to Hawaii to pursue his education, leaving behind a pregnant wife and an infant son in his home town of Nyang’oma Kogelo in Kenya.

Born in Kenya, Barack Obama Sr. came to the University of Hawaii in order to study for a degree in economics. This photograph hangs on the wall of his stepmother's house in Kogelo, Kenya.

Though she has signed this sophomore yearbook photograph of herself "Stanley" (her parents named her Stanley Ann at birth) Obama's mother was known as Ann for most of her life. After attending Mercer Island High School in Washington, she enrolled at the University of Hawaii, where she met Barack Obama, Sr.

Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. married on February 2, 1961 - Dunham was three months pregnant at the time of her marriage, Obama Jr. was born 6 months later. (See "Stanley Ann Dunham's Revenge" http://www.rense.com/general82/stan.htm )

For the first six years of his life, Barack lived in Hawaii.

Obama's parents separated when "Junior" was only two years old in 1962 because Obama Sr. had again left his second wife and child so that he could move to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he would begin graduate study at Harvard in the fall of 1962. Two years later Dunham filed for divorce in Honolulu in January of 1964.
*As an aside: This blogger lived in Hawaii at the same time Obama did during this time. My father was stationed at Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu.
After the divorce, Barack Jr. only saw his father one more time, in Hawaii, in 1972, when this photograph was taken. The senior Barack then returned to Kenya, where he worked for a US oil company and the Kenyan government.

Two years after her divorce from Obama Sr., Stanley Ann Dunham married again - to an Indonesian student named Lolo Soetoro around 1966 or 1967, (who was also attending college in Hawaii). Lolo Soetoro (AKA Lolo Soetoro Mangunharjo or Mangundikardjo) was the Indonesian stepfather of Barack Obama. (It is reported that Obama may have been legally adopted by Lolo Soetoro, which some say might have revoked Obama's claim to American citizenship.)
When Suharto, a military leader in Lolo Soetoro's home country, came to power in 1967, all Indonesian students studying abroad were recalled and the family (Stanley, Lolo, and Barack) moved to the island nation. So, from ages six to ten, Obama Junior attended local schools in Jakarta, including Besuki Public School and St. Francis of Assisi School. At this time Obama Jr. was "Barry Soetoro" and was called Barry up until his early college years. (Besides his native English, Obama speaks Indonesian at the conversational level, which he learned during his four childhood years in Jakarta.) On August 15, 1970, Obama gained a half-sister named Maya Kassandra Soetoro - A Leo like himself, who also attended school in Jakarta. (Today she is a high-school history teacher at La Pietra: Hawaii School for Girls in Honolulu, Hawaii)

Barack Obama AKA Barry Soetoro

This registration document above was made available on Jan. 24, 2007, by the Fransiskus Assisi school in Jakarta, Indonesia, and shows the registration of Barack Obama under the name Barry Soetoro into the Catholic school made by his step-father, Lolo Soetoro. The document lists Barry Soetoro as a Indonesian citizen, born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, and shows that his Muslim step-father listed the boy's religion as Islam. More on this below. It was during this time that Obama's (Barry's) mother (now Stanley Ann Soetoro) focused on women's work on the island of Java and blacksmithing in Indonesia. To address the problem of poverty in rural villages, she created microcredit programs while working as a consultant for the United States Agency for International Development. Dunham was also employed by the Ford Foundation in Jakarta and she consulted with the Asian Development Bank in Pakistan.
Maya Soetoro, the daughter of Barack's mother and her second husband, Lolo Soetoro, sits beside the young Barack, Ann and grandfather Stanley Dunham in this photograph taken in Hawaii the early 1970s.

It's still unclear to this author why in 1971 Obama was sent to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents, Madelyn and Stanley Armour Dunham, where he attended Punahou School (a private college preparatory school) from the fifth grade until his graduation from high school in 1979 (And for some reason during this time, Obama's mother had decided to return to Hawaii a year later in 1972, where she remained until 1977).

Then, in 1977 while Obama was still only 15 years old, his mother again relocated to Indonesia to work as an anthropological field worker and for the Bank Rakyat Indonesia (rather than be with his mother, Obama choose to stay in Hawaii).
In high school, like many kids his age during that era, Obama smokes marijuana and does cocaine (Yes, he inhaled!) High school friend Keith Kakugawa relates later that Obama “…made everything out like it was all racial.” After Obama complains about being picked on at the basketball court because of his race, Kakugawa’s father tells Obama, “No, Barry, it’s not because you’re black, it’s because you missed two shots in a row.” Kakugawa denies Obama’s claims that they often had heated discussions about race. The talks, Kakugawa says, were not about race, “Barry’s biggest struggles then were missing his parents. His biggest struggles were his feelings of abandonment. The idea that his biggest struggle was race is bull shit.”
Following high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to attend Occidental College.
Obama became friends with Pakistani Muslims and safely away from his grandparents, starts smoking cigarettes (He continued the habit until an attempt to quit in February of 2007). He becomes interested in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.

Fascinating!
Obama's mother, now Stanley Ann Soetoro, and Lolo Soetoro, divorced in 1980 and for reasons unknown, she began using the name Ann Dunham-Sutoro, with the modern spelling of her former husband's surname (as opposed to "Soetoro").
After two years at Occidental College, Obama transferred in 1981 to Columbia University in New York City - Below he's with his grandparents.
Obama's father dies in a car accident in Kenya in 1982, at the age of 46 when Junior was 21.
After four years in New York City, Obama moved to Chicago to become a community organizer and met his future wife Michelle.
In 1988 he spent five weeks in Kenya, where he met many of his paternal relatives for the first time. On his father's side, Obama has numerous relatives. He has made several visits to the home of his step grandmother, Sarah Obama, front row, second from right. He also has four half brothers through his father.
That same year Obama entered Harvard Law School. After graduating from Harvard in 1991, he returned to Chicago, where he worked as a civil rights attorney, then taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.

Obama and Michelle married in 1992. Shortly thereafter, they spent a Christmas in Hawaii, where this photo was taken.

In 1994 Stanley Ann Dunham-Sutoro finally returned to Hawaii and lived there for one year before dying of ovarian cancer.
1995 Obama published "Dreams from My Father". His current Senior Advisor, Valerie Jarrett, held a book-signing party for him at her parent's home.

Regarding the registration document above for "Barry Soetoro"
Verification:
A quick search through Google reveals that there is an actual Associated Press photographer by the name Tatan Syuflana. It appears that this photographer specializes in the Indonesian region of the world. The above photo which was hosted on Daylife.com was uploaded around February 14, 2007, or about 2 or so weeks after the document was released according to the photo caption from Daylife.com that states that the document was made available on January 24, 2007.
Samples of Tatan Syuflan's work appears in common news websites such as CBS, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Time magazine. What is still mysterious is that the photo of the registration document appears to be scrubbed. In depth research finds that any site related to the Associated Press does not feature it on their site. If it did, it appeared briefly. The actual document itself is eluded to in various articles.
Reasons for censorship?
The Associated Press and the rest of the mainstream media probably had this photo of the registration document in their hands or databases but refused to touch it. After CNN published the facts that FOX News had incorrectly reported that the school was a madrassa, the entire issue of Barack Obama's name of 'Barry Soetero' was side stepped. It was probably decided that this material or photo shouldn't be available to the general public. (The same idea was probably applied to any audio or visual media related to a separate issue concerning an interview between Barack Obama and Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times.) Therefore the image lay untouched and untranslated in the Daylife.com photo repository until February 2007.

An article from a South African website refers to this registration document:
Israella Darmawan was Obama's teacher while he attended the Catholic St Francis of Assisi school in Jakarta's up-scale Menteng district. Jakarta - The "little curly-haired one" is well remembered by his Indonesian teacher Darmawan, and it was in 1968 when Barack Obama joined her class. Darmawan, 64, who retired last year, now only returns to her former school to tell current pupils about their now-famous alumnus. She takes a faded book from a shelf, the school register dating back to 1968 - Under registration number 203 it reads in large-lettered handwriting: "Barry Soetoro."
